I had an encounter with myself and "my story" just in the last few days. Fortunately, I'm practiced enough to pull back from the story to watch it play out in an unattached way.
As I bore witness to myself, I watched my nervous system light up like a Christmas tree, as if it were real, but simultaneously, I was able to remind myself that my assumptions (fears) might not be true.
By the time I had gone through my process over several hours, I was able to see where my mind jumped to conclusions and fabricated the entire thing, including "the story" itself.
That said, in creating my potential villains, I was able to self-evaluate in the reflection of myself enabling me to clear out some fears and shadows which were the root of creating "the story" in the first place. Deep into the process, I also did not leak negative energy onto those whom I "thought" might be doing this thing to me because I knew this was about me, not them.
Needless to say, I was deeply grateful for the experience to see myself and my fears more clearly.
